My degree is in elementary education. Sadly, I opted not to pursue teaching after about a year of substituting. I'm ok with that. I'm glad I have an education, a degree and the experiences I gained while teaching. There are many reasons why I decided not to continue down that path, but regardless, I ended up working for a plastic surgeon in Newport Beach for the past 4 years. It was a good job. I was paid well, I loved the people I worked with and for, but unfortunately there was a lot of "down time." My husband, Chris was juggling multiple jobs and always working. CrossFit Costa Mesa was and continues to be his priority, for one reason... he is passionate about it. I wanted to join him. I wanted to do something that I really cared about. Sure, I liked the patients that I worked with, but I certainly wasn't passionate about plastic surgery. I felt like I related better to the 80-year-old men coming in for skin cancer removal than I did the 20-year-old girls coming in for boob jobs. CrossFit is something that I AM passionate about. It's something special that Chris and I share. Almost all of our friends are people from the gym. We can't stop talking about it. We're always doing it. It's a lifestyle. It's community, it's fitness, it's health. We're so blessed to be able to also call it a job.
There was a turning point in Chris' career when we realized that 1) he was making enough money to support us without my paycheck and 2) he could really use my help. My last day at the Dr.'s office was June 1. In addition to "helping" Chris at the gym, I also took a part-time position with Functional Equipment. Over the last 3 months I've thoroughly enjoyed the transition from 9-5 desk job to working from home and at the gym. I'm embarrassed to admit what time I wake up in the morning, so let's just put it this way, today, I got up early (7:30!) I usually spend several hours during the day working on Functional Equipment stuff (my official title is, Controller) and then I help my awesome friend, Lindsay Schuil coach onboarding at CrossFit Costa Mesa on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. With our big gym relocation that's been tentatively happening for the past 4-5 months, I've been really busy helping out with that...calling, emailing, and meeting vendors for everything from flooring to trash collection. I'm also really good at making Starbucks runs and I've actually been able to make my husband and I dinner a few days a week. There's been times when my day starts at 6am or ends at 10pm and we almost always work on the weekends, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I love being able to do a workout at 10am or 4pm. (Note to self: next blog topic should be about my current CrossFit training program with Max). I love my life. I am truly blessed. I especially love my husband for making it possible for me to live my life in a sports bra!
I finally read it! I'm so glad you get to live life in a sports bra too. love you! :)
